National flower blooms in June at Botanic Park

Mother Nature offers the perfect reason to ‘Go East’ during the month of June as the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park blossoms with beauty when the Wild Banana Orchids come into bloom.

The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park is home to 10 of the 26 orchid species recorded from the Cayman Islands, and three of these are found nowhere else on earth, says a press release. One of these unique three, the most commonly seen by Park visitors, is Cayman’s National Flower, the Wild Banana Orchid (Myrmecophila thomsoniana) that is abundant in all natural areas.
This large epiphytic orchid produces white and purple magnificent flowers on stalks measuring up to six feet long. The Banana Orchid is just coming into bloom now and will be blooming throughout the month of June. Look for these blossoms all along the Woodland Trail as well as on native trees throughout the entire Botanic Park, the release advises. ‘These beautiful plants are found nowhere else in the world, so take a visit to the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park to see the national flower in all of its glory.’
The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park is located in the district of North Side, a 40-minute drive east from George Town.
